Abstract

Corrosion is a dangerous phenomenon that can cause many losses. Gray cast iron is a very useful material for humans that can be used for industrial and engineering needs. The use of gray cast iron in various fields causes gray cast iron to be susceptible to corrosion. It cannot be denied that this will hinder industrial activities. There are various ways to prevent corrosion. One technique is electroplating, namely with chrome and brass. The aim of this research is to determine the comparison of the corrosion rate of gray cast iron that has been coated with brass and chrome using seawater corrosive media. The tools used to test the corrosion rate are Cortest 300 and CS Studio 5. From the results of specimen research, the corrosion rate value for gray cast iron coated with brass is 0.080451 mmpy with an average coating thickness of 14.720 µm, while the corrosion rate value for gray cast iron coated with chrome is 0.015727 mmpy with an average coating thickness of 12.158 µm. The highest corrosion rate value is for gray cast iron coated with brass, so the corrosion rate for the brass layer is higher than for the chrome layer.
