Abstract

The objectives of this study are (1) to find out the steps for solving basic mathematics problems in the material of fractional function (2) to describe the difficulty of students in understanding the steps in completing the steps for solving basic mathematics problems in the material of fractional functions. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The research subjects were 8 students. Data collection methods used are observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis technique uses data reduction, data presentation, and verification or drawing conclusions. The results of the research are (1) Difficulty when determining the x-axis intersection, namely students are not careful in determining the factorization of the quadratic function so that they experience errors in the results; (2) Difficulty in determining the point of intersection of the y-axis, namely the student made an error in the result; (3) Difficulty in determining the oblique asymptote, namely students do not look for and do not calculate the results; (4) Difficulty in determining the vertical asymptotes, namely students experiencing errors when calculating the result of factorization of the quadratic function; (5) Difficulty in determining flat asymptotes, namely students do not do one of the steps of solving this quadratic split function; (6) Difficulty in determining the point of intersection with flat asymptotes, namely students do not complete the steps of solving this quadratic split function; (7) Difficulty in determining extreme prices, namely students having difficulty finding the maximum or minimum point; (8) Difficulty when determining tabulations, namely students having difficulty determining x and y, and also when putting them in place; (9) Difficulty when determining the graph, namely students have difficulty determining the coordinates of the point. The most difficult difficulties experienced by students when solving basic math problems with split function materials, namely when determining extreme prices, tabulations, and graphs.
