Abstract

This study purposed to describe 1) the development of competence values and attitudes of democratic culture in Civics subjects through a contextual teaching and learning approach 2) obstacles to developing competence values and attitudes of democratic culture in Civics subjects through a contextual teaching and learning approach 3) solutions for developing value competencies and attitudes of democratic culture in Civics subjects through a contextual teaching and learning approach. This study used a qualitative method with a case study approach. The data were collected using interviews, observation, and documentation. Triangulation of data using triangulation of data sources and triangulation of data collection techniques. Data analysis used an interactive model. The result of this study indicated that the development of competence values and attitudes of democratic culture in civic subjects through a contextual teaching and learning approach at SMK Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta was going well. Students were given freedom of opinion, students could respect their friends when they had opinions, students were treated fairly in opinion opportunities, and students could maintained trust by doing assignments honestly and on time. Constraints experienced by students were lack of confidence, some students lack mutual respect, limited time for teachers, and lack of student responsibility. The solution to these obstacles motivated students to express their opinion, admonished students who did not listen to their colleagues' opinions, allowed students to meet at the next meeting, and warned students to complete assignments. Based on the research results, teachers could develop value and attitude competencies through a contextual teaching and learning approach.
