Abstract

The background of this research is the number of writing errors and the use of improved spelling, even though EYD is something that must be considered when writing. The error was due to the students' lack of understanding regarding the use of proper spelling. The purpose of this study was to analyze the Diction and Punctuation of Narrative Texts for Class VII Students at SMP Muhammadiyah Pangkalan Bun. This type of research is descriptive qualitative to describe the use of diction and punctuation in narrative essays of students in class VII SMP Muhammadiyah Pangkalan Bun. The subjects of this study were seventh grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Pangkalan Bun. While the object of this research is the Diction and Punctuation of Narrative Text for Class VII students of SMP Muhammadiyah Pangkalan Bun. The type of data in this study used written data, which were sourced from narrative essays written by 26 seventh grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Pangkalan Bun. The method used is data collection with document techniques. This research was conducted by describing the use of diction, especially the accuracy of the use of diction with seven diction accuracy requirements. From the results of the analysis conducted by the researcher, 26 of the 13 students' narrative essays were obtained. Of the seven types of diction accuracy requirements analyzed, five inaccuracies in the use of diction were found, namely 1) Synonymous words, 2)The use of general words and special words, 3) The use of connotative and denotative words, 4) The use of sense words, 5) Continuity of word choice, and from the data obtained, some are not found according to the terms of accuracy of diction, namely 1) Abstract and Concrete Words 2 ) Use of foreign words and terms.
