Abstract

Writing skills as a productive language ability. For the world of education writing is very important because writing makes it easier for someone to remember and can unify perceptions in solving problems. However, in writing, there are still many students who have difficulty arranging words, such as using excessive or useless words which are usually called redundant words. The objectives of this study were (1) to describe the types of redundant words found in the descriptive text written by the seventh grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kartasura. (2) Describe the factors that cause students to use redundant words in the descriptive text written by SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kartasura students. (3) Describe the development of students 'language competencies, especially those reflected in the students' vocabulary mastery. This study uses a different method with mark-up reading and changing techniques. The methods used in collecting data are library techniques, observation and note-taking techniques. The subjects in this study were students of class VII SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kartasura. The object of the research is the word redundant in the descriptive text written by the students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kartasura. The results of this study indicate that (1) the types of redundant words in the repetition of the word are 15. (2) The types of words that are redundant in the plural form are 2. (3) The types of words that are redundant in the superlative are 2. The factors that cause students to use redundant words include (1) Mastery of poor vocabulary 2. (2) Lack of understanding about effective writing is 1. (3) The students' lack of understanding about good writing is 1.
