Abstract

Lack of knowledge about the prevention of neuropathy in people with diabetes mellitus can lead to inadequate management of neuropathy. Knowledge is one of the important factors that can determine the success of people with diabetes mellitus in treating neuropathy. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between knowledge about prevention and treatment of diabetic neuropathy in diabetes melitus sufferers in Sukoharjo district. This type of research is a quantitative and descriptive correlation research design with a cross sectional approach. The study sample was 120 respondents who were taken by purposive sampling technique from the entire population, namely all diabetes melitus sufferers who met the inclusion criteria. The data was collected using a questionnaire that was made by the researcher and the validity and reliability tests had been tested. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Spearman Rank test. The results of the univariate analysis showed that the knowledge level of the respondents was mostly good as many as 92 (76.7%) and the handling of diabetic neuropathy in most of the respondents was quite good as many as 78 (65%). The results of the Spearman Rank test showed that the r count was 0.439 with sufficient correlation and a p-value of 0.001 (<0.05), it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between knowledge of prevention and management of diabetic neuropathy in diabetes melitus sufferers in Sukoharjo Regency. Advice for diabetes melitus sufferers is the need to maintain and increase knowledge about diabetes melitus, practice in the prevention and management of diabetic neuropathy, so as to minimize the risk of complications, especially neuropathy.
