Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the types of errors and factors that cause students to make mistakes in solving math problems on the set material based on Newman's theory. This descriptive qualitative research used the subjects of grade VII students of SMP Negeri 1 Grogol in the 2019/2020 school year. The researcher is the main instrument with test questions and interview guides as supporting instruments. The data collection technique used the test, interview and documentation methods. The data analysis technique used descriptive qualitative data analysis. The validity of the data used triangulation methods, namely comparing the results of the test analysis and the results of the interview analysis. The results of the study: (1) students with high abilities made three types of errors, namely transformation errors, process skill errors, and encoding errors; (2) students with moderate and low ability make four types of errors, namely comprehensions errors, transformation errors, process skill errors, and encoding errors; (3) the causes of students making mistakes include not being used to writing, low understanding, not being careful, not memorizing formulas and lack of practice questions.
