Abstract
Background: Urinary incontinence is a urinary system’s disorders that often occurs in elderly. Urinary incontinence itself is defined as a condition when someone loses control of his or her bladder. Urinary incontinence can cause disruption of daily activities and embarrassment in elderly. Both of these can cause social isolation in elderly. Social isolation that occurs causes psychological disorders in elderly, namely depression Purpose: This study aims to determine the relationship between urinary incontinence in the elderly and depression experienced by the elderly. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional method with a purpose sampling technique. The number of samples used was 40 samples. Retrieval of research data on elderly using a questionnaire, namely the Incontinence Severity Index (ISI) to measure urinary incontinence and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) to measure depression. The Spearman rank test was used in this study to examine the relationship between the two variables, namely urinary incontinence and depression. Results: The results of the Spearman rank test showed a sig value of 0.002, a relationship of 0.474 and a positive direction. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between urinary incontinence and depression in the elderly, with moderate strength and unidirectional relationships.
