Abstract

This research discusses the deixis analysis contained in Fidgety Fish (2001), Smiley Shark (2003) and Clumsy Crab (2005) by Ruth Galloway. The purpose of this study was to find the types of deixis and the function of the types of deixis based on Yule's theory (1996). This study belongs to descriptive qualitative. The data of this research are utterances and narrative in the children’s books containing deixis. The data source are children’s bilingual story books Fidgety Fish (2001), Smiley Shark (2003) and Clumsy Crab (2005) by Ruth Galloway. The Data are collected using documentation technique, and analyzed in terms of the types and the function of the deixis with the reference to Yule’s theory (1996). The steps of the analysis are classifying the types of deixis, explaining the context where the deixis are used, coding the data, determining the function of the deixis and drawing conclusion. The results of data analysis show that there are three of the five types of deixis i.e. person deixis (86 data or 97,72% of the total data), temporal deixis (1 or 1,14% ), and spatial deixis (1 or 1,14%). In addition, the person deixis consists of first singular person deixis (7 data or 7,95%), first plural person deixis (4 data or 4,54%), second singular person deixis (5 data or 5,68%), third singular person deixis (63 data or 71,59%), and third plural person deixis (7 data or 7,95%). Further, the function of the deixis used in the storybooks are: the function of first-person deixis is to refer to the speaker himself or herself as the sending the message; the function of second person deixis is to refer to the addressee as the listener or received the message; the function of third person deixis is to refer to the one who is neither speaker nor addressee; the function of spatial deixis is the to refer or to point the location of the speaker which could be proximal form (close from the speaker) and distal form (away from the speaker, and the function of temporal deixis is to refer to the time when utterance was committed. This research, to some extent, shows how language are deployed in children’s books. Future research is recommended to investigate different aspects of deixis applied on more various genres of children’s books.
