Abstract
This study aims (1) to find out the critical thinking skills of male students in solving relationship story problems and functions, (2) to examine the critical thinking skills of female students in solving relationship story problems and functions. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods. The population of this research is VIII grade students of SMP 5 Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta. The sample of this study was six male students and six female students of class VIII at SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta in 2019/2020 which were selected according to level. Data collection techniques in the form of tests, interviews, and documentation. Technical analysis uses data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. Based on the results obtained show that female students have the ability to think critically better than male students. This is indicated by analyzing test results and interviews with male and female students. Of the five indicators male and female students have differences from each indicator female students are able to explain correctly and completely, while male students of the five indicators are only able to explain correctly and completely related to the indicators providing basic explanations.
