Abstract
Education is one of the needs for every human being, as one of the subjects taught in mathematics school is a subject that has an important role, problem-solving activities are one of the cores of learning mathematics, as well as the main goal of learning mathematics, the application of Van theory Hiele is believed to be able to overcome the difficulties of students in solving problems in geometry. This study aims to determine the division of students' level of thinking based on Van Hiele's theory and to determine the ability of students to solve ball equation problems based on Van Hiele's theory. This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The division of students' level of thinking in this study based on Van Hiele's theory is that 4 students are at level 0 (Visualization), 13 students are at level 1 (Analysis), 11 students are at level 2 (Abstraction), and 3 students are at level 3 ( Deduction), and the ability of students to solve problems in this study is divided into four, including: 1) Very low ability students are at level 0 (visualization), 2) Low ability students are at level 1 (Analysis), 3) High ability students are at level 2 (Abstraction), 4) Very capable students are at level 3 (Deduction). The findings in this study indicate that the level of thinking ability of students in solving geometry problems especially on the subject of spherical equations cannot rise to a higher level before the student passes the lower level first.
