Abstract
Many products are composed of two or more components that combine permanently to produce new structural properties. This joining method includes various binders, interference type joints, adhesives, and to produce the highest joints, many joining techniques are classified in welding. Brazing is an amalgamation process in which the parent metal is heated at an appropriate temperature above 450 ° C (840 ° F) and by using ferrous or nonferrous filler metals which must have a liquidus temperature above 450 ° C (840 ° F) and below the temperature of the parent metal's solidus. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of adding zinc powder in the desoldering process of aluminum-stainless steel on mechanical properties. The specimens in this study used aluminum series 1000, stainless steel series 304, alubraze ER4043, and zinc powder with lap joint type. The standard for making specimens is ASTM D1002. The results of the testing of the composition of the material show that the aluminum is 1000 series with the 3 biggest elements being Aluminum (Al) 99.28%, Iron (Fe) 0.453% and Silicon (Si) 0.183% while stainless steel shows that the stainless steel is 304 series based on writing 64937/304 / 2.00 / 2B stated on the plate material. The highest tensile strength was found in the variation without the addition of powder with a stress of 12,4 MPa and a strain of 0.097 (9.7%), whereas in the variation of the addition of zinc powder the lower stress results were obtained by 10 MPa and a strain of 0.022 (2.2%) . The effect of adding zinc powder (Zn) influences the yield and strain yield of the specimen which causes the connection to the specimen to become brittle. The hardness value in the weld metal joint area (nugget) without the addition of powder was 238 VHN, which was higher than without the addition of zinc powder at 51 VHN. This is because zinc powder (Zn) does not melt completely so that the liquid filler cannot bind it perfectly.
