Abstract
The purpose of this research is to improve students' communication and activities in mathematics learning through the Snowball Throwing learning model conducted at grade VIII A students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kartasura. Data collection techniques that used in this study were observation, field notes, and documentation. Data analysis techniques used in this study are data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions (data verification). The results of this study are improving communication skills and student learning activities of 34 students, it can be seen by the following communication indicators: 1) the ability to express mathematical ideas through writing there are 12 students (35.30%) increased to 23 students (67.65% ). 2) the ability to convey mathematical ideas orally there are 10 students (29.41%) increased to 22 students (64.71%). 3) the ability to express mathematical ideas into the form of tables, diagrams, graphs, symbols, or mathematical models there are 5 students (14.70%) increased to 18 students (52.94%). While indicators on learning activities include: 1) actively asking there are 7 students (20.59%) increasing to 22 students (64.71%), 2) actively answering questions there are 11 students (32.35%) increasing to 23 students (67.65%), 3) active during group work there were 14 students (41.18%) increased to 25 students (73.53%).
