Abstract
This research aims to describe the types and factors that cause students to mistake in solving the problem story of HOTS type fractions. The type of research is a qualitative study. The subjects of this research are 22 students of class VII IT in SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Surakarta. The techniques of data collection are using written tests, interviews and documentation. The techniques of data analysis are data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The validity of data using technique triangulation by comparing the documentation of student work results with the results of interviews. The error category uses the Newman error category. The results showed that error in analyzing aspects, evaluate aspects, and create aspects are reading error, comprehension error, transformation error, process skills error, and encoding error. The dominant factors causing student errors are accuracy of reading questions is still low, lack of ability to understand the problem, low skills in computing, less skilled in changing information on problems and not accustomed to writing answers according to the rules.
