Abstract

This study aims to describe the controversial news-based learning method in the mass media collaboration Small Group Discussions to improve the ability to analyze cases. The research method uses pre-experimental designs with the types of pretest and posttest. The data collection in this study used directed interviews, observation and questionnaires for 30 students of SMP IT Nur Hasan Boarding School Boyolali in 2019/2020 Academic Year. The validity test in this study uses the product moment correlation formula and the results of the validity calculation note that 24 items in the questionnaire the ability to analyze the case is valid, while the reliability test using these calculations shows the value of the reliability coefficient using the Alpha Cronbach formula of 0.9035323 while the critical value of 0,6 Analysis of the data used in this study is paired t-test. Controversial news-based learning methods in the collaboration mass media Small Group Discussions are expected to improve the ability to analyze cases. The results showed that tcount 7.51507831 was greater than t table 2.042 with a significance level of 0.05. The difference between pretest and posttest shows that students have increased ability to analyze cases. The average pretest score of 71,91 increased to 83,17 at the posttest. Based on the two data are then compared so that the difference value obtained is 11,25. These results can be concluded that the hypothesis proposed by H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted, meaning that there is an increase in the ability to analyze cases. This ability is directed towards aspects of knowledge on controversial issues, the suitability of the discussion method with the development of critical thinking, the role of the teacher, student participation, problem solving and the benefits of discussion.
