Abstract
This study aims to describe the students’ strategies, students’ difficulties, and find out the most appropriate strategies in answering multiple choice question of reading passage. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The subject of the research is the students in class X11 IPS 1 of SMA N 1 Klego, Boyolali. The object of the research is multiple choice questions of reading passage. The data of the research is multiple choice questions of reading passage and the sources of the data are the students’ answer sheet in answering multiple choice questions of reading passage at the third grade of SMA N 1 Klego, Boyolali. The methods of collecting data are test, interview and document. The techniques of data analysis are reduction of the data, presentation of the data and verification of the data. The results of this research show that, first, in answering multiple choice questions of reading passage the students can’t manage the appropriate strategies because they use the same strategy to answer the questions although the category of the questions is different. Their strategy is reading then trying to find the meaning of all the word before they answer the questions. Second, the students’ difficulties in answering multiple choice of reading passage are lack of mastering vocabulary, difficult to draw the conclusion of reading passage and lack of the time to answer the questions. Third, the most appropriate strategies in answering multiple choice questions of reading passage are scanning, skimming, and careful study, so they can interpret the major concept presented in reading passage.
