Abstract
Children are certainly everyone's dream in a family. The family also wants children who are born where they grow and develop normally. But in fact, there are families who have children born with physical or psychological limitations at the beginning of development. WHO estimates that the number of children with disabilities is around 7-10% of the total child population. Disability figures at the age of 5-17 years were 3.3%, ages 18-59 years were 22%, and aged 60 years and over 2.6% with severe disabilities and total dependence (Ismandari, 2018). Parents should pay special attention to children who experience limitations, such as children with mental retardation. Children with mental retardation have less intelligence so that they have difficulty adapting or doing daily activities. But children also have the potential to be able to develop their abilities by being educated or trained continuously for that the main role in good parenting must be had on parents. Objective: To determine the experience of parenting in children mentally retarded. Research Methods: Qualitative research with a narrative inquiry approach. Participants numbered 7 people with a purposive sampling technique. The Results of study: Obtained parenting in children with mental retardation is authoritarian parenting, permissive parenting, and democratic parenting is more widely applied by parents. Conclusion: Research obtained from the analysis of the theme is authoritarian parenting, democratic parenting, and permissive parenting.
