Abstract

This study aims to determine the increase on the understanding of concepts in learning mathematics Pythagorean theorem material through a contextual approach to class VIII A students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kartasura. This type of research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subjects of the study were class VIII A students of Muhammadiyah 1 Kartasura Middle School, totaling 36 students. consisting of 25 male students, 11 female students and mathematics teachers in class VIII A. Data collection techniques are done through interviews, tests, field notes and documentation. The data analysis technique used is interactive analysis techniques, namely data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate an increase in understanding of students' mathematical concepts from before the action until the action is completed. This can be seen in the indicators - understanding of student concepts as follows: 1) restate a concept before the action by 35%, in the first cycle increased to 55%, in the second cycle increased to 78%. 2) students are able to classify objects according to certain properties before the action by 58%, in the first cycle increased to 72%, in the second cycle increased to 83%. 3) students are able to present concepts in various forms of mathematical representation before action by 40%, in the first cycle increased to 69%, in the second cycle increased to 83%. 4) students are able to apply concepts or algorithms in problem solving before action by 47%, in the first cycle increased to 50%, in the second cycle increased to 78%
