Abstract

This research investigates the ethnography of communication that occurs in the talk show interview among Van Jones and the guest using Dell Hymes ' SPEAKING theory depending on topic variations in The Van Jones Show. The purposes of this research is: explaining the message of communication conveyed in The Van Jones Show. This research is analyzed using descriptive qualitative research type. The SPEAKING theory by Hymes is used as the instrument in analyzing the data. Based on the analysis, it is found that the talk show has messages that are conveyed in each segment. They are: a) First segment, sharing the participant feelings and experiences toward shooting mass and their contribution in fighting for justice against gun violence. There are also sensitising people to realize the importance of voting in order to make the wrong people out. b) Second segment, sharing information and experience about the shooting tragedy and criticizing the working of politicians c) Third segment, giving perspective about policy agenda from Parkland students d) Fourth segment, sharing experience and feeling of participant and giving support to the movement e) Fifth segment, sharing feeling toward the tragedy, sending hope, and giving advice towards the movement.
