Abstract
The purpose of this study was (1) to analyze the writing of explanatory texts, (2) to find out the sentence errors at the syntactic level of explanatory text writing for students of class XI vocational school. This type of research is qualitative research with a case study method. This type of research using the method is used by researchers to express sentence errors in essays of explanatory texts in class XI RPL 1 of Muhammadiyah Vocational School, Sukoharjo. The results of the study show that the explanatory text written by class XI RPL 1 students at SMK Muhammadiyah Sukoharjo still had a number of errors. The cause of the error is because there are several factors that cause errors, namely 10 sentences are non-standard structured sentences, 4 sentences are coherence, 12 sentences contain redundant words, 1 sentence is a non-logic sentence, 3 sentences are contaminated with foreign languages, 6 sentences are not clear, and 3 sentences there is an improper diction. It can be concluded that students still experience difficulties and errors in composing a text essay.
