Abstract

Productivity of organizational activities requires commitments from all members. For the smooth functioning of the organization, each member needs the support of others, especially from fellow members of the organization. In terms of gender Forsyth (2014) stated that women and men have different cultures in their involvement in the organization. Women find it easier to get social support because having more open in relationships between individuals than men. This study aims to determine the relationship between social support of fellow members with organizational commitment in terms of gender in IMM (Muhammadiyah Student Association) at UMS. Based on this problem, the author proposes a hypothesis "there is a relationship between social support of fellow members with organizational commitment in terms of gender". This study uses a quantitative method with scale to measure the social support of fellow members variable and organizational commitment variable. The sampling technique uses Accidental Sampling. Respondents consisted of 120 (60 women and 60 men) IMM member students 2016/2017 period from various faculties at UMS. The results showed that there was a very significant positive relationship between social support of fellow members and organizational commitment. It means, the higher social support, the organizational commitment increases. The role of social support of fellow members for organizational commitment is 35%, which means the remaining 65% is influenced by other variables not examined in this study, such as job design, organizational value, organizational culture, and leadership style. The Social support of fellow members and organizational commitment in IMM in general is high. The organizational commitment between IMM members of women and male IMM members did not differ significantly.
