Abstract
Abstract This study aims to describe students' mistakes and analyze the causes of errors in grade VII students of Muhammadiyah Middle School 4 Surakarta in completing one-variable linear equation story problems based on Polya’s theory. This type of research is qualitative descriptive. The subjects used in this study were class VII A Muhammadiyah 4 Middle School in Surakarta. Data collection techniques include tests, interviews and documentation. The validity of the data is done by triangulating the method by comparing data in different ways. Technical analysis of data through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion or verification. The results showed that there were four errors in solving linear equations one variable based on Polya's steps, namely (1) error understanding the problem of not being able to write information related to the problem what was known and asked about the problem, making a plan that could not change the sentence into the mathematical model as well as errors in choosing the completion steps, mistakes in implementing the plan, namely the writing error of the answer and lack of mastering the concept of counting operations, and mistakes in re-checking the answers, students are reluctant and are not used to checking answers. (2) the causes of errors are low understanding of students in understanding the concepts related to PLSV material, difficulties in translating story problems into mathematical models, students are not thorough in numeracy skills. Keywords : error analysis, Polya, story problem, PLSV
