Abstract

Introduction: Psychiatric emergencies are applications for clinical treatment related to emergency management in patients with mental disorders. Strong knowledge is needed to provide the handling of psychiatric emergencies, where nurses' knowledge is influenced by the characteristics contained within themselves. The purpose of the study: to determine the relationship of personal characteristics of nurses to the level of knowledge of nurses about the handling of emergency psychiatry in mental hospital emergency rooms. Research method: The method of this research is quantitative with descriptive corelative research design. This research was conducted in three Mental Hospitals in the Central Java Region, namely Surakarta, Klaten and Magelang in September-October 2018. The samples used were 49 respondents, taken using a proportional random sampling technique. The instrument in this study used a questionnaire regarding personal characteristics and questionnaires regarding the level of knowledge. Results of the study: based on the chi-square test analysis and fisher's exact test showed that there was a relationship between personal characteristics (gender) (p-value 0.027), personal characteristics (age) (p-value 0.004), personal characteristics (length of work) (p -value 0.013), personal characteristics (education) (p-value 0.007), and personal characteristics (training) (p-value 0.041) with a level of knowledge about the handling of emergency psychiatry in the emergency room.
