Abstract

The ability to solve mathematical problems is a way of thinking in solving a problem related to mathematics. The purpose of this research is to describe the ability of seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Gatak in solving the material of triangular and rectangular story cases. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative research. Data collection techniques used are interviews and documentation. Data analysis technique is done through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. Data validity by using technique triangulation. Subjects of this study are 6 students of class VII D with high category, the category of medium and low categories. The results showed that subjects with high ability to understand issues, planning issues, fix the problem and re-examine the results of his work. Subject to the ability of being able to understand the problem and devise a plan, but most students do not solve the problem correctly and check his work. Subjects with low ability have difficulty in understanding the problem, at this stage of the subject does not plan to write sentences math first, the subject also did not use the appropriate formula. The subject is also unable to solve problems appropriately and did not check back to their work. The results showed that the students have not been using the ability to complete word problems based on measures Polya namely understanding the problems, planning problems, the resolution of the problem and check back at the writing resolution. at this stage of the subject does not plan to write sentences math first, the subject also did not use the appropriate formula. The subject is also unable to solve problems appropriately and did not check back to their work. The result showed that the subject did not use the Polya method in solving story cases, namely understanding the problem, planning problem solving, solving problems and doing crosscheck results.
