Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this research was to describe the role of literacy education conducted by TBM Panggon Sinau to children. This research is focused on the meaning of existence of TBM Panggon Sinau for Jayan village community, the benefit of literacy education conducted by TBM for children, as well as the factors that inhibit and supports literacy education. The qualitative research method is used through case studies where data is collected through interviews, observation and documentation. This study involves 4 parties with each represented by two informants: 1) Activist of the Muhammadiyah Student Association at Faculty of Psychology of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, 2) Managers of TBM Panggon Sinau, 3) local government in Jayan village, 4) Parents whose children are user of community library. The validity of the data is achieved by using triangular methods and content. Research results showed the children's literacy education is carried out through the provision of infrastructure and a variety of activities to increase interest in community library. The existence of the TBM was able to build collective positive attitude of the public and increased awareness of the importance of reading and educational playing conducted by literacy community for their children. TBM Panggon Sinau’s networking with student organization, University, literacy communities as well as the local government have powered TBM and motivated people to keep creating advancements for the village of Jayan. Barriers experienced by TBM with regards to the lack of Central Government's role in the development of TBM and lack of related knowledge in administering community library.
