Abstract

This study is about Commissive speech act. The research is focused on commissive utterance in the speech used by Trump in Saudi Arabia in 2017. The commissive utterance is very valuable in Trump's speech, because the main purpose of Trump's speech is to tell the participants about information and promise from problems in the Middle East. The purpose of the study is to find out the types and intentions of commissive speech.The technique of collecting data is documentation and observation. The data source of this research is manuscript. In collecting the data, the researcher follows the techniques of (1)watching Trump’s speech, (2) identifying data of commissive, and (3) classifying the types and intentions of commissive utterance . The result shows that (1) there are two sentence types of commissive utterances in the speech, they are declaratives and imperatives of the commissive utterance: 3 imperative and 20 declarative. (2) The researcher found four kinds of the intentions of the commissive utterance in the Trump’s speech ; 1 pledging, 10 promising, 5 threatening, 7 vowing. The commissive utterance are two kinds : direct and in direct, but in this speech use a direct sentence
