Abstract

This study describes, 1) the structure that builds in the novel Padang Bulan by Andrea Hirata, 2) the poverty problem found in the novel Padang Bulan by Andrea Hirata, 3) implementation of the discussion on literary learning at High school. This research uses qualitative descriptive research. Data source this research is a novel from Padang Bulan by Andrea Hirata. Data used in this study are sentences and paragraphs contained in the novel Padang Bulan by Andrea Hirata. This data shows the poverty problems contained in the novel. The results of this study show (1) structural analysis produces (a) the theme of this novel tells about the struggle to get a decent life (b) the main character named Enong and Ikal, additional figures namely Zamzami, Syalimah, Sirun, Ibu Nizam, M.Nur, Ayah Ikal, Ibu Ikal, A Ling, Zinar, Bibi Ikal, Uncle Ikal, Bu Indri, Minarni, Margareth Grace Tumewu, Alvin (c) The flow used is the forward flow (d) setting, which is the setting in East Belitung; the time setting occurred in the 1990s; social setting tells of the habits of the Belitung Malay community. (2) The problem of poverty in the novel Padang Bulan by Andrea Hirata which consists of five factors that cause poverty. The five factors of poverty problems are education, type of work, gender, access to basic health services, and infrastructure and geographic location. (3) This research can be implemented in literary teaching materials in class XII high school because it is in accordance with the criteria of literary teaching materials which include language angle, mental maturity (psychological), and students' cultural background based on the 2013 KD curriculum (3.9) analyzing the contents and the validity of the novel.
