Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe (1) comparison of the use of single sentences and sentences compound in the news text of eighth grade students. (2) the complexity of the sentence in terms of the number of clauses in each sentence in the news text of eighth grade students. (3) complexity of sentences based on the type of conjunction used in each sentence in the news text of VIII grade students. This study uses descriptive qualitative method by collecting news texts for eighth grade students in SMP Negeri 3 Colomadu. Data collection techniques use note-taking techniques and note-taking techniques to obtain written language data. Data analysis techniques using equivalent techniques lingual, comparing single sentences with compound sentences in the news text of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Colomadu that have been collected. Results of the study (1) Comparison of single sentences and compound sentences written by students shows the use of compound sentences more than single sentences, it is seen from the number of single sentences that is 113 sentences, while the number of compound sentences is 146 sentences. (2) Compound sentences in student news texts, there are compound sentences, density compound sentences, and multilevel compound sentences, each of which consists of two clauses and there are three clauses. (3) The conjunctions used by students in equivalent compound sentences are conjunction and, or, only, but. The conjunction used in multilevel compound sentences is conjunction after, when, until, if, because, because, so that.
