Abstract

The major problem of this study is to figure of the forms on sympathy and empathy utterances, describe the intention of sympathy and empathy utterances, and clarify the reason of employing sympathy and empathy utterances in movie manuscript. The data of this research are the utterances taken from printed material. Documentation is method of data collection used in this research. The researcher takes the data from internet in the form of movie manuscript. Then, researcher reads, underlines the dialogue, lists the data, and collects and gives code to the data. More, this research employs sociopragmatics analysis as the major field of study which is applied to figure out the forms, the intentions, and the reasons of addressing sympathy and empathy utterances. The result of this study shows that there are twelve data of sympathy utterances and three data of empathy utterances in the form of declarative sentence. (1) Seven data of sympathy utterances are in the form of simple sentence. Meanwhile, there are four data of sympathy utterances in the form of complex sentence, and there is only a datum of sympathy utterances in the form of compound sentence. There are two data of empathy utterances in the form of simple sentence and there is only a datum of empathy utterances in the form of compound sentences and. (2) It describe that there are five Intention of the speaker in using sympathy utterances. They are concern, encourage, and condoling. Meanwhile, there are two intentions of the speaker in using empathy utterances. They are to encourage and to show concern. (3) The reasons of addressing Sympathy utterances are showing distress, showing care, and showing grief. Meanwhile, the reasons of employing empathy utterances are showing advice and showing understanding (considerate).
