Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe students’ errors in solving problems on the topic of straight-line equation, and the factors that influence those errors. This study was conducted at uneven semester 2017/2018. The research subjects are students of grade VIII B SMP Negeri 2 Jatiroto. The techniques of collecting data were test, interview and documentation. Data validity using technique triangulation. Data analysis technique with three flow method. Based on the result of the research, (1) the higher step in Newman procedure, the more number of mistakes made by students, this error with the biggest percentage experienced by the students at encoding is 78.06% or 121 error, 120 process skill errors or 77.42%, 119 transformation errors or 76.77%, 30 comprehension errors or 19.35%, and 2 reading errors or 1, 29%; (2) the cause is students rush when reading the problem, students are less accustomed to solve the story problem, students are less careful in the process of counting, and students do not check back the answer sheets before collected.
