Abstract
The aim of this study are to describe the students' mistakes in completing the story about the surface area and volume of the cube by Newman in terms of gender theory in class VIII and analyze the causes of the students make mistakes. Newman's Error Analysis consists of five stages: reading, comprehension, process skill, and encoding. This research is using qualitative descriptive. The subjects wer six students, namely A, B, C, D, E and F are taken out of class VIII SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Surakarta. The data are collected by using test, interview, and documentation. Data validation was done using triangulation method. While the data analysis techniques use reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results show that: (1) male students' mistakes made by the subject A, B and C are at the stage of comprehension, transformation, process skill, and encoding. (2) female students' mistakes made by the subject D, E and F are at the stage of comprehension and encoding.(3) the cause of the error due to the concept error does not write down what is known and asked about, the error of writing the formula, the error count, the error does not write the conclusion. It can be concluded that the mistake made by male students are more than female students.
