Abstract

Data surveyed Indonesian Internet Service Provider Association (APJII) in 2017 showed that the service frequently accessed are chatting, which amounted to 87.13%. Social media is one form WhatsApp chats that take advantage of the use of language. The language used is often deviated from politeness. This study aimed to describe the realization of violation of politeness principle and its implications for Indonesian as teaching materials. This type of qualitative research with a pragmatic approach. This research data in the form of words, clauses, and sentences, while the data source is WhatsApp group of students. Data collection techniques with documentation techniques in the form screnshoot and refer to note. Data were analyzed using aggregated determinant element techniques. The results showed that 40 conversations in WhatsApp contains violation of politeness principle, which is 12(30%) conversation violation of tact maxim, 4(10) conversations violation of generosity maxim, 7(17%) violation of approbation maxim, 7(17%) violation of modesty maxim, 9(23%) violation of agrement maxim, and 1(3%) violation of sympathy maxim. In addition, this research could be implicated in learning Indonesian politeness principle can be taught by a teacher at the junior high scholl KD 3.12, KD 3.4, KD 3.8. Furthermore, for the senior high school in Class X KD 3.11. Violation of politeness principle highest is the tact maxim , while the lowest violation is the sympathy maxim.
