Abstract

This research aims to increase higher order thinking skills (HOTS) in mathematical learning by using open ended approach. This research is a classroom action research which it consist of two cycles.The subject of this research is grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Mojolaban school year 2017/2018. Data collection techniques in this research are observation, field notes, documentation and tests. The technique of data analysis is using three step methods there are data analysis process, data presentation, and conclusion (data verification). The result of the research shows there enhancement HOTS grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 1 Mojolaban school year 2017/2018, The result HOTS enhancement obtained (1) The student category with low level of HOTS from initial conditions (34%) after the action become (9%), (2) The student category with moderate HOTS from initial conditions (25%) after the action become (16%), (3) The student category with high level HOTS from initial conditions (41%) after the action become (75%). The Average between cycles shows the enhancement; In pre action obtained the class average 66,25 then in cycle I obtained 70,47 furthermore obtained 80,88 in cycle II. Based on the explanation can be concluded the application of open ended approach in mathematical learning can increase HOTS.
