Abstract

The object of the research is the novel entitled Silas Marner written by George Elliot. The study focuses on the sociological aspect of the novel. The major problem of this study is how the cultural preservation is reflected in George Elliot’s Silas Marner based on sociological approach. This approach is aimed at analyzing cultural preservation in the story. This research is qualitative research. The primary data source is Silas Marner novel itself and secondary data source are the other sources related to the analysis. This research is qualitative research. The primary data source is Silas Marner novel itself and secondary data source are the other sources related to the analysis like theory of sociology of literature by Swingewood. The method of the data collection is descriptive analysis. The result of the study reveals the relationship between the novel and the social reality. In Silas Marner, George Elliot depicts cultural preservation in the character through politic social, economic, religious and science and technology aspects.
