Abstract

This research aims to describe:(1) the mistakes made by students in solving the problems questions about exponent (2) factor that causing the student to make mistake in working on material problem of exponent (3) alternatif to reduce error in problem solving. This type of research is qualitative research. The subject of this research is the students of class X MIPA 5 SMA Negeri 1 Kartasura against 34 students. Data processing techniques used are written tests, interviews, and documentation. The method of analyzing data performed through the reduction of data, the presentation of data, and the withdrawal of the conclusion. The analytical framework developed under Newman's disturbance category. The mistakes Based on the results of research made students include: (1) the error of the transformation of the cause of the students do not understand in the application of the formula and wrong in changing the form of mathematics correctly with alternatif solutions students better understand the basic concepts of exponential material and not only memorize the formula (2) the process of solving the problem cause students are not careful in calculating and forgetting the formula with alternatif solutions of students more practice questions and more deepen the concept (3) errors draw conclusions the cause of students rush in writing answers and because one in the process of solving problems with the alternatif solutions students more thoroughly during the process of working on the problem.
