Abstract

The foreign language learners could not avoid making errors in learning English. They are caused by the differences between the native language and English. Research should discover their problem and find alternative ways to solve them. The subject of the research is the students in the third class in SMA PGRI Kuwu III-IPA and III-IPS. The object of the study is the errors in using adjective clauses mode by 34 students of III-IPA and III-IPS. Then, the writer formulates that “what kinds of errors are made by the third year students of SMA PGRI Kuwu in using adjective clause?”. The writer used descriptive method. The writer used a test to collect the data. The data of this study are in the forms of adjective clause errors made by the student on their answer sheets. After collecting the data, the writer identifies error, classifies error, and tabulating many times each error occurs in percentage. The students in the test of adjective clause make the frequency of occurrence of each error types. Misformation are the highest errors. Then, it is followed by omission, addition, and misordering. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that defining adjective clause construction is considered more difficult than non-defining adjective clause. The writer suggest that the teacher should spend a considerable amount of time in explaining the usage of relative pronoun “who” and “whom” in defining adjective clause which are the most difficult for the students and should give a lot of opportunity to the students to practice these relative pronouns as often as possible in various ways.
