Abstract
This research is aimed at describing the technique of teacher in teaching English listening skill in SMP N 1 MIRI. The research used descriptive qualitative research. The collecting of the data in this study are (1)interview, (2)observation, and (3)document analysis. The results of this study show some techniques used by teachers in teaching listening at SMP N 1 MIRI. The techniques used by teachers are: (1) filling the gap is a technique used by teachers by means of students completing or completing empty words in paragraphs or dialogs contained in the video. (2) picture guessing is a technique used to explain the intent of the image contained in the video. (3) rearranging the sentence is a technique used by the teacher in giving a sentence or paragraph randomly. Students must arrange the sentence or paragraph to be the correct sentence according to the video given by the teacher. In the process of learning to teach listening skills, teacher uses video techniques and group activities. The teacher used video to support material. Teacher used group activities to help students in the learning process to be more effective in discussing with friends. There are three stages that teachers use to teach students listening skills namely, pre- listening, while- listening, and post-listening.
