Abstract

The study aimed to describe : (1) the socio-cultural background of Surat Kecil untuk Tuhan novel author, Agnes Davonar; (2 the structure of the novel Surat Kecil untuk Tuhan written by Agnes Davonar; (3 the character education aspects in the novel Surat Kecil untuk Tuhan by Agnes Davonar; and (4) the research result implementation in literature learning in Junior High Schools. The type of the study is descriptive qualitative. The strategy used in this study is embedded case study. The data used in this study are words, phrases, sentences, and discourses in the novel Surat Kecil untuk Tuhan that are suitable with the research object. The data sources are the novel Surat Kecil untuk Tuhan and some relevant literature books. The techniques used in collecting data are literature review, observation, and writing technique. The validity test is conducted through the theoretical triangulation. The data analysis is conducted through semiotic interpretation methods: heuristic and hermeneutic. The result of the study shows that (1) socio-culturally, Agnes Davonar’s works are sadness-nuanced and closed to teenage life; (2) the structure of the ovel Surat Kecil untuk Tuhan written by Agnes Davonar has parts or elements that functionally support each other; (3) there are eleven aspects of character education in the novel Surat Kecil untuk Tuhan written by Agnes Davonar: (a) religiosity, (b) hard work, (c) environmental awareness, (d) peacefulness, (e) reading interest, (f) friendliness and communication, (g) curiosity, (h) social care, (i) responsibility, and (j) achievement appreciation; (4) the result of the study has a relevance to the literature learning in Junior High School based on SK 13 and KD 13.1 and has a suitability with the teaching materials criteria: (a) language aspects, (b) psychological aspects, and (c) cultural aspects.
