Abstract

Background: Propolis is a resin collected by bees from various plants, which mix with saliva and various enzymes to produce different new resins. Propolis has antibacterial, antikapang, antiviral and other biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, local anesthesia, hepatoprotector, antitumor, and immunostimulant. Purpose: To determine the ability of natural propolis hepatoprotector typical of Kalimantan to damage morphological structure of male mice liver (Mus musculus, L.) exposed to cigarette smoke. Method: This study used an experimental research design with complete randomized design (post randomized design) posttest only with control group design. The subjects used were 30 male mice (Mus musculus, L) Swiss Webster strain aged ± 3 months with weight 20-30 grams. Ethanol propolis extract with a dose of 0.1 ml treatment; 0.2 ml; 0.4 ml; tested the effect of hepatoprotector on the morphological structure of male mice liver cells (Mus musculus L). With the number of 6 mices, divided into 5 groups of the normal control group (aquadest), negative control (1 cigarette), treatment 1 (1 cigarette + 0.1 ml propolis extract), treatments 2 (1 cigarette + propolis extract 0.2 ml) and treatments 3 (1 cigarette + 0.4 ml propolis extract). Then made preparations, observed and calculated morphological damage to liver cell based on cell damage criteria (pyknosis, karyorhexis, and karyolisis). Research data were analyzed statistically by using statistical application in computer. Result: Ethanol propolis extract of natural honey typical of Kalimantan effectively inhibit the damage of morphological structure of male mice liver (Mus musculus, L.) exposed to cigarette smoke with a dose of 0.1 ml; 0.2 ml; 0.4 ml treatment. Conclusion: Ethanol propolis extract of natural honey typical of Kalimantan with a dose of 0.1 ml; 0.2 ml; 0.4 ml treatment effectively inhibits damage to the morphological structure of male mice liver cells (Mus musculus, L.) exposed to cigarette smoke.
