Abstract
Green tea (Camellia sinensis) contains flavonoid compounds which antioxidant activity is several ten times larger than other antioxidant compounds that can inhibit spermatozoa damage due to ROS. The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of green tea leaf extract (Camellia sinesis) on the number of spermatozoa male mice (Mus musculus L.) exposed cigarette smoke. This research used laboratory experimental post test only control group design. The subjects were 35 male mice Swiss Webster strain Mus musculus aged 2-3 months, weight ± 20 grams. The subjects were divided into 5 groups: normal control group, negative control group (cigarette exposure), treatment group 1 (cigarette exposure + 1.25% extract), treatment group 2 (cigarette exposure + 2.5% extract), treatment group 3 (cigarette exposure + 5% extract) performed daily for 35 days. Counting the number of spermatozoa performed on day 36, by taking cauda epididymis. Data were analyzed using normality and homogeneity test then one-way ANOVA and followed by LSD post hoc test. Based on statistic test, the sample were normal and homogene. Then followed by one-way ANOVA, p = 0,002 (p <0,05) there were significant difference between green tea leaf extract (Camellia sinesis) to the number of spermatozoa male mice (Mus musculus L.) exposed to cigarette smoke. The Result of post hoc LSD test between negative control with treatment 1 p=0,008, negative control with treatment 2 p=0,000, negative control with treatment 3 p=0,002. The result of LSD post hoc test showed that all dose had significant difference compared with negative control with p value <0,05. It was concluded that green tea leaf extract (Camellia sinesis) can increase the number of spermatozoa male mice (Mus musculus L.) exposed to cigarette smoke with effective dose respectively are dose II (2.5%), dose III (5%) and dose 1 (1.25%).
