Abstract
The aim of this research is to describe instructional design in teaching learning process of English at SD Islam Al Azhar 28 Solo Baru. The descriptions are including: (1) the classroom techniques, (2) the classroom procedure, (3) the role of the teachers, and (4) the role of the learners. This is a qualitative research using naturalistic approach. The settings were all the classes in SDIA 28 Solo Baru. The sources of data are event, informant and content analysis in gaining the data from the sources like headmaster and English teachers. The data were collected through observation, interview, and documentation. Data validity was checked using prolonged engagement, persistent observation, triangulation, and member check technique. The data analysis was carried out through procedure of reduction data, data validation, data categorization, and conclusion. The findings showed that the classroom techniques in SDIA 28 Solo Baru were various. The teachers used songs, nursery rhymes, storytelling and games. The songs and nursery rhymes were used to add the students’ vocabulary especially for the grade 1, 2, and 3 while story telling and games were used mostly in the grade 4, 5, and 6. For the most technique used game as it could engage the students into the materials. The classroom procedures used were Practice, Produce and Present (PPP) and Engage, Study and Apply (ESA). The teachers’ roles were planner, controller, and resources so the teachers planned the materials like media, executed the plan, and facilitated the students to study. Sometimes a teacher – centered was applied. The divisions of students were active participant or passive participant could be arranged properly. They became active and passive depend on the teachers plan. They were active in the game techniques and passive in the considered difficult materials like cultural reading texts.
