Abstract

This research aimed to know: 1) The increase in the students’ critical and creative thinking abilities before the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning model, 2) The increasing in the students’ critical and creative thinking abilities after the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning model, 3) the implementation of the Problem-Based Learning model to increase the students’ critical and creative thinking abilities in learning economics. This research used a Classroom Action Research (Penelitian Tindakan Kelas [PTK]) in which the action in this research included four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The four stages were conducted in two cycles. The technique of data collection was conducted through observation, interview and documentation. The data validity test was through the triangulation of the data source and the technique of the data collection. This research was conducted in SMP Negeri 1 Tambaksari with the research subject was the 8th grade. The results of this research revealed that the implementation of problem-based learning model can increase the students’ critical and creative thinking abilities in the social science lesson. It was proved from the results of the students’ observation which were getting increased and increased. From the result of the pre-cycle observation, it was obtained the average of the critical thinking ability from 30 students that was only 28% and the average of the creative thinking ability of the students that was only 38%. In the first cycle, the average of the critical thinking ability from 30 students reached 47% and the average of the creative thinking ability of the students reached 63% from the attainment index of 75%. In the second cycle, it increased in which the average of the critical thinking ability from 30 students increased into 77% and the average of the creative thinking ability of the students increased into 88%.
