Abstract

This research has investigated a principal's management in developing the quality of learning at SMP Islam Terpadu Darul Fikri Bawen and SMP Negeri 3 Ambarawa of Semarang Regency in 2017. This research has had several aims particularly to get valid information about: 1) to find out the principal's management in developing the quality of learning at SMP Islam Terpadu Darul Fikri Bawen and SMP Negeri 3 Ambarawa of Semarang Regency in 2017, 2) to investigate the factors that led to benefits and drawbacks of the principal's management in developing the quality of learning at SMP Islam Terpadu Darul Fikri Bawen and SMP Negeri 3 Ambarawa of Semarang regency in 2017. This research used a method of descriptive qualitative, in which the research procedure provided descriptive data in written or spoken forms that could be used for real life. Further, the data were collected through interview, observation, and documentation and data validity. The participants of this research are the principal as school manager and teachers. The data were presented by using a naturalistic descriptive approach which proposed various objective conditions that were found from the field related to the the implementation of learning process at SMP. Based on the findings, it could be concluded that; 1) The school principal of SMP IT Darul Fikri Bawen in developing the quality of learning was through implementing Multiple Intelligent System, in which it was the supervisory role by monitoring, evaluating and following up on the supervisory findings. The school principle of SMP Negeri 3 Ambarawa prioritised the school management in developing the quality of learning based on several criteria. They were selecting the students based on the national exam grades, providing the facilities that supported the learning process, improving the teachers’ quality, and improving the students’ ability through reading habit culture. There were two similarities related to the school management from these two principals, they were implementing leadership skill called Consultative Leadership Style and optimised management function including planning, organizing, encouraging, and controlling. 2) The factors that led this benefit run by the school principal of SMP IT Darul Fikri Bawen were teacher loyalty, inter-school network, foundation support, and parents support while at SMP Negeri 3 Ambarawa were teacher quality, geographical school area, and infrastructure facilities. However, the factors that led to the drawbacks from the school principal perspective at SMP IT Darul Fikri Bawen were the school geographical area which was not strategic position, infrastructure facilities, temporary teachers who moved sometimes, and limitation of funds while the drawback factors at SMP Negeri 3 Ambarawa were a limited area of school position, teacher age, and government policy.
