Abstract
This research is aimed at describing the types of expressive utterance, describing the intention of expressive utterance, and classifying the politeness principles of expressive. The object of this research is expressive utterances in Pearl Harbor movie manuscript. The researcher employs the descriptive qualitative research as the type of the study. The data are the expressive utterance in Pearl Harbor movie manuscript. The method of collecting data is document. The techniques of analyzing data are that the writer tries to classify the expressive utterance based on the Searle theory, applying speech act theory to know the intention of the data, and applying the Leech theory to know the politeness patterns used in data. The result of analysis shows that first; there are ten types of expressive act used in Pearl Harbor movie. They are apologizing, thanking, greeting, welcoming, blaming, complaining, praising, dispraising, rejoice, condolence, and apologizing acts has the highest intensity 20.8%. Second, the intentions are that there are ten types of expressive act. Third, there are five politeness patterns used in Pearl Harbor movie, they are tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, agreement maxim, sympathy maxim, and tact maxim has the highest intensity 29.17%.
