Abstract
This research is aimed at describing the lexical and contextual meaning of jargon and also determines the proper speaker’s reasons. The data are jargons that are taken from movie manuscript entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Man’s Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. In collecting the data, the writer uses documentary method by selecting the jargon words, which can be found in that movie manuscript. The first step of analyzing data is that the writer described the lexical meaning and the contextual meaning of jargon in Pirates of the Caribbean movie manuscripts and then compared the meaning lexically and contextually. Then in determining the proper reason of bringing jargon, the writer used SPEAKING theory of Hymes. Having analyzed the data, the writer finds that there are 6 aspects of meaning based on Poedjosudarmo theory that are the real meaning of the word is broader than the new meaning represented by the same words, the real meaning of the word is narrower than its new meaning represented by the same words, the new meaning and the real meaning of the word can share some features of meaning whereas such of them has different meaning, the real meaning and the new meaning of the word is identical each other but used in different field, the real meaning and the new meaning of the word is quite different, the new meaning does not have the real meaning. And also the reason of bringing jargon are showing location, showing place, showing device, showing profession, showing direction, and showing means of sea transportation.
