Abstract
Mathematics education is very important for human life because in every joint of life, almost inseparable from mathematics. However, most students still find mathematics lessons that are not easy and saturating, so they are difficult to understand. Difficulties of this student will certainly lead to errors in solving the problem. For that, need to know and analyze what errors are done. So that by knowing the mistake, can be done countermeasures so that the next similar errors do not happen again. This study aims to describe the errors and factors causing students to make mistakes in solving the social arithmetic word problems. This type of research is qualitative. This type of research is qualitative. Subjects in this study were students of class VII G SMP Batik Surakarta, amounting to 31 students. Data collection techniques used include tests, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques performed with the data reduction, data display, and the conclusion drawing or verification. The validity of the research data is obtained through source triangulation by comparing test data, interviews and documentation. The analysis guidelines are developed based on the type of Newman's error. The result of analysis of the research data obtained 4 types of mistakes that are comprehension error 4,84%, transformation error 52,42%, process skill error 12,50%, and encoding error 3,23%. Factors causing these errors include the lack of accuracy of students in writing what is asked and students do not know the purpose of the thing asked from the question, lack of students problem solving skills and lack of understanding of students' concepts, students who are less precise in the process of calculation and not yet master the way of calculation to change the value in the form of percent into the form of numbers and students in a hurry in the work so forget not to check back the suitability between the answers with question.
