Abstract

The objectives of the study are to find the language form, speaker’s intention and the politeness pattern of directive utterance in children stories. They are: Sinbad The Seventh Voyages, Cinderella and The Living Sand Castle. In collecting the data the writer uses documentation method by selecting the directive utterance which can be found in children stories. The data are taken from children stories that are rewritten by John Rickey. The stories are: Sinbad The Seventh Voyages, Cinderella and The Living Sand Castle. This research employs the theory of language form, speech act and Face Threatening Acct Theory. The result of the study shows that first, the language forms of directive utterances are: declarative sentence, interrogative and imperative sentence. Second, the speaker’s intentions of using directive utterance are: commanding, requesting, suggesting, warning and permitting. Third, the politeness strategies of directive utterance are: Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness and Off Record strategy.
