Abstract

This research paper aims at observing and identifying the teaching and learning strategies that are used in English extracurricular activities at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Program Keagamaan (MAN PK) 1 Surakarta for mastering English speaking skill. The type of the research is descriptive qualitative method which is used to describe the teaching and learning strategies to master speaking skill and to describe the students’ responses toward the use of the strategies. There are two techniques in collecting data; observation and interview. The data are taken from the teacher, the students, the English extracurricular activities of second year students of MAN PK 1 Surakarta. Based on the research finding, it can be seen that the subject of the research uses Contextual Teaching and Learning in teaching and learning process of English extracurricular activities. The result of the observation and interview shows that Contextual Teaching and Learning strategies which were used in English extracurricular activities are (1) Problem-based Learning, (2) Using Multiple Context, (3) Drawing upon Students Diversity, (4) Supporting Self-regulated Learning, (5) Using Interdependent Learning Group, and (6) Authentic Assessment. The students have positive responses toward the use of Contextual Teaching and Learning in English extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities support their learning to master speaking skill. They can improve speaking skill because they have more chances to practice the English in the real context of their daily lives. It makes Contextual Teaching and Learning in English extracurricular activities run effectively to improve the students speaking skill.
