Abstract
The study is aimed to find out the function of interrogative sentences employed in the film Romeo and Juliet applied by the characters of the film in accordance with certain context affecting the characters choice in using them. The research began on January 2007. In research, the writer uses descriptive method, a kind of research method using technique of searching, collecting, classifying, analyzing the data, interpreting them and finally drawing the conclusion. The writer uses four instruments. They are: library, notes, transcript book and CD of the film. Based on the result of the research, there are three functions of interrogatives. They are challenging, requesting and questioning. Challenging is the function of interrogative sentences that is addressed by the speaker in order that the listener becomes angry and make quarrel with him that occur in the dialogue when the domains are public place and entertainment, the participants are enemies and the topics are quarrel. Requesting is addressed by the speaker when he/she wants the listener to do what he/she asks used in the family and friendship domain. The participant is usually an individual person and the topics are daily problems. Questioning is addressed by the speaker to get some information from the listener that occurs in all domain. The other researchers are expected to study from the different point of view such as commissive, declaratives, expressive and representative expressions in studying speech act. The students are expected to understand and study further about interrogatives and their functions. It is letter for them to know the intention of the speaker in uttering the interrogatives.
