Abstract
The study is aimed at examining the (1) type of errors and (2) sources of errors in indirect speech that are made by the students. Error analysis on students’ work will be useful and give some contributions to the process of teaching and learning process. Analyzing error is significant since this will lead to a greater understanding of the difficulties that the students face and perhaps assist in the development of pedagogic strategies. The method of this study is descriptive method. The subject of the study is the second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Wonogiri in 2007 / 2008 academic year that consists of 52 students. A writing composition test is used to collect the data. The writer used Surface Strategy Taxonomy in describing errors. The study shows that (1) there are four types of error (a) omission (106 errors or 8, 2%);(b) addition (83 errors or 6, 4%);(c) misformation 1066 errors or (82, 6 %);(d) misordering (37 errors or 2, 8%) .(2)The sources of errors are classified into two types (a) interlingual errors (1 error or 0, 07%); (b) intralingual errors (1291 errors or 99, 93%). The conclusion that can be drawn from this study is that second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Wonogiri in 2007/2008 academic year still find difficulties in constructing well- formed sentences.
